Creating a Realistic Jean Texture

Tutorial in Advanced, Drawing, Effects, Goodies

Let’s create a jean texture that has a great and realistic result.

Open a new document (430×720px and transparent background).

Fill it in with #1e497e.

Create a ((New Layer)) and go to ((Edit))-((Fill)).

Now go to ((Filter))-((Sketch))-((Halftone Pattern)).

Then ((Filter))-((Pixelate))-((Mezzotint)). Select ((Fine Dots)) and accept the changes.

Press Ctrl + T to activate ((Free Transform)) and, in the options bar located in the top side of the document, rotate the upper side of the document, rotate the layer 45ยบ. Take a look at the image below.

Duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl + J and place it in the inferior area of the document. As you can see, the idea id to cover the whole document with these two layers.

Select the 2 layer and press Ctrl + E to unify them.

Now apply ((Filter))-((Blur))-((Gaussean Blur)).

GO to the middle layer and change the layer style to ((Soft Light)).

Then, go to the superior layer and change the layer style to ((Multiply)).

Let’s create the Jean’s seams. The idea is to create a natural division, I mean, not to make them very straight so that they look more real.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Select ((Polygonal Lazo Tool)) or ((Pen Tool)) and trace a rectangle with curved corners. Enlarge the following image and observe what I mean.

Then go to ((Edit))-((Fill)) and fill it in with “50% Gray”.

Change the layer style to ((Hard Light)).

Double click the layer to go to ((Blending Options)).

((Drop Shadow)).

((Bevel and Emboss)).

Save the changes.

We’re not done yet. LEt’s play with ((Dodge Tool)) and ((Burn Tool)) in order to get an even more real effect.

First select ((Dodge Tool)), enter the values that appear in the options bar of the mentioned tool, and paint 2 or 3 times over the bevel. Take a look at the following image.

Do the same with ((Burn Tool)) and with some small modifications in the options. With this tool, also paint the bevel edges until you get something like this:

Create a ((New Layer)).

Go to ((Edit))-((Fill)) and fill it in with “50% Gray”.

Change the layer style to ((Color Dodge)).

Finally, use ((Brun Tool)) and ((Dodge Tool)) with the same values you used before, but with bigger brushes. Paint some shades and shines in the new layer so that it looks more real.

This is the final result.
