Creating a Wrinkled Paper in Photoshop

Tutorial in Advanced, Designing, Drawing, Effects, Goodies

We will learn to create a wrinkled paper (text included), using the filter ((Displace)).

Open a new document (500×500px and transparent background).

Fill it in with color #6d6d6d.

Create a ((New Layer)).

With ((Rectangular Marquee Tool)), create the paper selection and fill it in with white.

Select ((Gradient Tool)) and change the mode to ((Difference)). Then trace small gradients, diagonally, until you see something like the image below.

Then apply ((Filter))-((Stylize))-((Emboss)).

As you will see in the image below, the borders are white.

In order to fix it, erase the borders with ((Rectangular Marquee Tool)).

The next step will consist on applying ((Image))-((Adjustments))-((Levels)) and moving the white slider until the paper looks real.

Then go to ((Edit))-((Transform))-((Wrap)) to deform the paper. Take a look at the changes I made in the following image.

Press Enter and observe the results. The paper is folded.

You can also add a text and make it look wrinkled as well.

Ctrl + Click the layer so that you activate the selection.

Then go to ((Edit))-((Copy)), then Ctrl + N (it will automatically create a new document with the same size of the paper).

Go to ((Edit))-((Paste)) to paste the folder.

Save the file under the name “displacement.psd”.

Close the document.

Go back to the other document.

Write the text you want.

Now right click the test layer’s name and choose ((Rasterize Type)).

Ctrl + Click the paper layer to activate the selection.

Go to ((Filter))-((Distort))-((Displace)), enter the values that appear below.

Once it is accepted, a window will pop up; there you will need to look for the saved “displacement.psd” file.

This is my result. After you apply the filter ((Displace)) you will notice that the text has adapted to the wrinkles.

I hope you liked it. Greets!
