Creating a Comet

Tutorial in Advanced, Designing, Drawing, Effects, In Photos

In this tutorial you will learn to add stars to a picture and then we will add a comet.

Open the image. In order to create the tutorial I recommend you to download a night image from a search engine.

Create a ((New Layer)) and fill it in with white.

Go to ((Windows))-((Brushes)) to edit the brush. Enter the values that appear below.

((Brush Tip Shape)).

((Shape Dinamics)).

((Scattering)).

Choose black as primary color.

After entering the values, select ((Brush Tool)) and draw stars in the layer you have filled in with white.

Now select ((Magic Wand Tool)) and click the white area so that it’s marked and go to ((Select))-((Inverse)) ton invert the selection.

Press delete.

Create a ((New Layer)).

With the selection active, go to ((Edit))-((Fill)).

At this moment you should have this result.

Click ((Add Layer Mask)), which is located in the lower part of the ((Layers)) menu.

Eliminate the leftover stars.

Press D to reset the colors to b&w.

Select ((Gradient Tool)) from black to white, linear, go to the Layer Mask, and trace the gradient from bottom to top, or however you want. It depends on the image and on your taste.

Choose white as the primary color.

Create a ((New Layer)).

In the new layer, select ((Brush Tool)), the size according to a real comet, and ((Hardness)): 0%. Draw a white spot as the one you will see in the image below.

Now let’s create the comet’s wake.

Go to ((Filter))-((Stylize))-((Wind)). ((Method)): Wind / ((Direction)): From the Left.

Apply a small blur on the comet. ((Filter))-((Blur))-((Gaussean Blur)).

In order to apply the effect, you will need to rotate the comet 90º. To do so, go to ((Edit))-((Transform))-((Rotate 90º CCW)).

Once it’s rotated, go to ((Filter))-((Distort))-((Shear)).

Let’s curve it a little bit.

Go to ((Edit))-((Transform))-((Rotate 90º CW)), so that the comet goes to its original position.

Our night, full of stars and a comet, is done!
