We will create the classic and well known emoticon that appears in instant messengers such as Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, and so on. This time, you will be the creators.

Open a new document, 400×400px, and black background.

Create a new layer.

Select ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)) and, pressing ALT + Shift, create a perfect circumference.

Choose orange and light yellow from the color palette. Select ((gradient tool)), ((Radial Gradient)) and apply the gradient as the following image shows.

If you want, you can apply a ((Stroke)) to the face.

Create a ((new layer)), draw an oval which will be the eye of the emoticon. FIll it in with a gradient from grey to white. Inside the oval, create another circumference and paint it with black. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl + J) and place it to the other side. The eyes will be created.

Create a ((new layer)).

Ctrl + Click the layer to activate the selection. Then ((Select))-((Modify))-((Contract)), 3px. Select  ((gradient tool)) from white to transparent and trace the gradient from top to bottom so that it looks like this.

Create a (new layer))

You just need to draw the mouth. You can use ((Pen Tool)) or activate the selection of the face by pressing control + click and, also pressing shift, remove a circular selection. Fill it in with black. Once you have done this, you will see the mouth is quite big. With ((Free Transform)) (Ctrl + T), reduce the size until it looks coherent.
