Photograph with Painted Edges

Tutorial in Basics, Drawing, Effects, In Photos

In this tutorial you will learn how to create painted edges as if they were oil-painted . We will also make it look as if it were painted on linen cloth. Let’s use some of the default Photoshop brushes, a ((Layer Mask)), and the ((Texturizer)) filter. Let’s get started!

Open the image.

Create a ((new layer)) and fill it in with white.

Select ((Pen Tool)), right click on the document, a dropdown menu will appear, you will find an arrow in the upper left side; click it and choose ((Thick Heavy Brushes)). It will ask if we want to replace the ((Brushes)), select ((Append)).

From the bottom, select the ((Brush)) named ((Flat Bristle)).

On the layer you recently filled in with white, create a ((Layer Mask)). You can see the button you need to click to create it in the image below.

Press D so that black is the front color and, on ((Layer Mask)), paint the image in order to get the following effect.

Now change the ((Brush)) and select the brush that is next to the one you chose before. It’s the ((Rough Flat Bristle)). With this new ((Brush)) you will paint the edges of the image. Make sure you are on the ((Layer Mask)).

Create a ((new layer)) and fill it in with white.

Finally, apply the filter so that it looks like a real linen cloth painting. So go to ((Filter))-((Texture))-((Texturizer)). You can find the values in the image below.

You just need to change the layer blending mode to ((Multiply)) and reduce the ((opacidad)) to 40%.

Observe the result.
