Drawing a Tomato in Photoshop

Tutorial in Basics, Designing, Drawing

In this tutorial you will learn to draw a tomato in Photoshop. We will use some tools that I personally use a lot when it comes to drawing. These are: ((Dodge Tool)) and ((Burn Tool)). Don’t freak out! Don’t worry if it doesn’t go OK the first time, simply keep trying until you get the desired result. The said advice id for all the tools yo will use since the beginning to the end of the tutorial. Remember that if you want to undo an action, you have to press Ctrl + Alt + Z.

Open a new document, 450×450px, and white background.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Select ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)) and draw a selection as the one that appears below.

Fill it in with color #fa0e0e.

Well, now select ((Burn Tool)), ((Highlights)) to draw some shadows to the tomato, all around it and in the center. Enlarge the following image to see my process.

Try different brush sizes and values of ((Expoure)) to get better results.

Again with ((Burn Tool)), draw some shadows in the superior area.

Now select ((Dodge Tool)), ((Shadows)) to paint some shines in the tomato. Observe the following image to see the result.

Now draw the tail.

Select ((Pen Tool)) and create a trace as shown in the image below.

Press Ctrl + Enter to transform the trace into selection.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Fill in the selection with color #109106.

With ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)), trace a selection as the one that appears below, and with ((Burn Tool)), ((Highlights)) paint the borders of the selection.

Repeat the previous step in the other side of the tail.

In the following image I ended completing the shadows in the tail.

Then with ((Dodge Tool)), ((Shadows)), paint some shines in the tail.

Create a ((New Layer)) and place it between the front and the first tomato layer.

Finally, draw the shadow of the tomato.

With ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)) trace a circle as the one you see below and fill it in with black.

Deselect (Ctrl + D).

Apply ((Filter))-((Blur))-((Gaussean Blur)).

This is the final tomato!
