Drawing a Radar

Tutorial in Basics, Designing, Drawing

This is an excellent tutorial in which you will create a radar, as the one that they use in ships and control towers in airports. You will first download a texture which you will apply to the background. To draw the radar, we will use ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)), ((Layer Styles)) such as: ((Inner Shadow)), ((Outer Glow)), ((Bevel and Emboss)), ((Gradient Overlay)) y ((Color Overlay)). You will also use ((Free Transform)), ((Line Tool)), ((Brush Tool)) and the filter ((Radial Blur)).

Open a new document, 1280×1024px, and transparent background.

Download the image by clicking HERE and place it in the document.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Select ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)) to trace a circle as the one you see below.

Fill it in with any color.

Double click the layer to apply ((Layer Styles)).

((Inner Shadow)).

((Outer Glow)).

((Gradient Overlay)). Use these colors: #18b238, #000000, #152d17, #0a5618, #088026, and #18b238.

Accept the changes and check out the result in the following images.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Trace a circular selection smaller to the other one (Alt + Shift to to enlarge it proportionally from the center).

Go to ((Edit))-((Stroke)) to fill in the selection’s contour.

Duplicate this layer (Ctrl + J) 4 times.

With ((Free Transform)) (Ctrl + T) reduce the size of the circles.

Select the 5 layers and press Ctrl + E to unify them in an independent layer.

Reduce the ((opacity)) a 43%.

Duplicate the unified layer (Ctrl + J).

Increase the ((opacity)) to 100%.

Select ((Blur Tool)) with the values you see in the following image and paint the layer you duplicated.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Choose #1b9e3e as the foreground color.

Now select ((Line Tool)), 3px, and trace a vertical line in the center of the radar.

Duplicate the line’s layer (Ctrl + J) and, with ((Free Transform)), rotate it.

Duplicate it as many times as it needs to complete the whole circle. See the image below.

Create a ((New Layer)).

With ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)) draw a circular selection 10% bigger than the radar.

Now, with the same tool but ((Subtract From Selection)), cut part of the selection.

Fill it in with white.

Double click the layer to apply ((Layer Styles)).

((Bevel and Emboss)).

((Color Overlay)).

Accept the changes.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Draw some point in the radar.

Choose ((Brush Tool)) with a soft brush and white color in order to do so.

Finally, apply ((Filter))-((Blur))-((Radial Blur)): 8, Spin, Good.

Done! With this radar your enemy won’t run away.
