This tutorial will show you how to create realistic screws using some selections, gradients, and layers styles.
Open a new document (500×500px and transparent background).
Make a selection in the center of the document, using ((Ellipical Marquee Tool)).
Press D and then X in order to change the color palette to black and white.
Now choose ((Gradient Tool)), radial type, and trace a gradient as shown below.
Create a ((new layer)).
Draw a rectangle as the one shown below and fill it in with grey, use ((Rectangular Marquee Tool)).
As you can see, there is a part of the rectangle coming out of the circle. Let’s erase it.
Now press Ctrl + Click on the circle layer in order to activate the circular selection. Then go to menu ((Select))-((Invert)). Finally, go back to the layer you draw the rectangle in and press ((Delete)). Take a look at the image below and notice how the rectangle ends right where the circle ends.
On the rectangle layer, apply ((Layer))-((Layer Styles))-((Blending Options)).
((Inner Shadow)).
After you apply ((Layer Style)), it will look like this.
Now go to the circle layer and press Ctrl + U to open the ((Hue/Saturation)) window. Before you enter the values, which are shown below, select ((Colorize)).
We’re getting closer to the final result. Let’s make it more perfect.
Go to the rectangle layer and press Ctrl + U, activate ((Colorize)).
Apply ((Filter))-((Noise))-((Add Noise)) on the circle layer so that it looks more realistic. You can see the values you need to use in the image bellow.
Apply the same filter to the rectangle layer.
To rotate the screw you just need to press Ctrl + T ((Free Transform)) and rotate the rectangle.
