Creating a Pencil Logo

Tutorial in Basics, Designing, Drawing, Web

We will design a pencil which you will then be able to use as a logo or mark. It’s very easy to create and anyone, as long as they have a basic knowledge of Photoshop, will be able to do it.

Open a new document (400×300px and white bakground).

Create a ((New Layer)).

Select ((Rectangle Tool)) and draw a black rectangle as the one that appears below.

Now select ((Pen Tool)) and create a trace as the one you can see below.

To transform the trace into selection, press Ctrl + Enter.

Then press delete.

Double click the layer to go to ((Layer Styles)).

((Gradient Overlay)). For the gradient, use these colors: #fffcc2 and #ebdc23.

Save the changes. You will have this result.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Choose color #f5b97b as the main color.

Now select ((Shape Tool)) and apply the default triangle; the one that comes included in Photoshop.

With ((Free Transform)) ((Ctrl + T)), rotate the triangle 90º and then place the layer below the one you just created.

Ctrl + Click the layer to activate the selection.

Then with ((Rectangular Marquee Tool)), ((Subtract From Selection)) reduce the selection to what it will later be the graph of a pencil.

Create a ((New Layer)) and fill the new selection with black.

Now stand in the triangle layer.

Select ((Polygonal Lazo Tool)) and draw the following selection. Then apply ((Dodge Tool)) until you see something like this.

Create another selection in the lower part of the pencil, with the help of ((Polygonal Lazo Tool)). Then select ((Burn Tool)) and apply it until you the the effect that appears in the following image.

Double click the layer and apply ((Layer Styles)), ((Gradient Overlay)).

Use these colors: #b09e5f and #fefdb4.

Save the changes.

Double click the graph layer to apply ((Gradient Overlay)).

Now accept the changes. The pencil should look like this:

Create another ((New Layer)).

With ((Elliptical Marquee Tool)), draw the back part of the pencil, fill it in with black and place it below the other layers. Observe the following image.

To this layer, also apply ((Gradient Overlay)), so double click it. In this case, the colors of the gradient will be the ones you consider most appropriate, but I recommend you to choose dark colors.

Accept the changes.

Finally, I added some details in a new layer, with the layer style ((Multiply)).

This is the final result.
