Creating a Document Icon

Tutorial in Basics, Drawing, Web

This is another tutorial that will help you create icons. This time, we will create a document icon in a few steps.

Open a new document (200×200px and white background).

Create a ((new layer)).

With ((Rectangular Marquee Tool)), draw a rectangle and fill it in with black.

Now select ((Polygonal Lazo Tool)) and make a selection in the left top corner.

Press Ctrl + X to ((cut)) and Ctrl + V to ((paste)). The selection will be on the new layer.

Now go to ((Image))-((Rotate Canvas))-((Flip Canvas Vertical)).

Double click to go to ((Blending Options)) and select ((Color Overlay)). Choose a greay that is not very dark.

Rasterize the layer, ((Layer))-((Smart Objects))-((Convert To Smart Objects)) and finally ((Layer))-((Rasterize))-((Smart Objects)).

After you do so,  Ctrl + Click the layer to acivate the selection.

Select ((Brush Tool)), 20px, ((Hardness)): 20%, ((opacity)): 30%, and choose black from the color palette. Paint the base of the folded paper so that it looks like shadow. Take a look at the image below.

Now, on the bigger paper, press Ctrl + T to activate the whole selection.

Go to ((Select))-((Modify))-((Contract)). ((Radius)): 1px.

Once you hace reduced the selection, with ((Brush Tool)), size: 200px, grey as front color, and 62% ((opacity)), try to get a reflection like the one I made in the image below.

Create a ((new layer)).

Choose ((Line Tool)) with ((Weight)): 1px. Trace horizontal lines, pretending it is a text.

Reduce the ((opacity)) to 50%.

Select all the layers except for the background one and press Ctrl + E to unify them.

With ((Free Transform)) (Ctrl + T), rotate the icon 30º.

Ready. I added a shadow below the paper, you can add any detail you believe appropriate.
