“Appearing” Effect

Tutorial in Basics, Designing, Drawing, Effects, Goodies

Have you ever used the filter ((Liquify))? If you haven’t, this tutorial will be great for you to get to know it and play with it. Let’s create a cool effect that will make an image look like it’s growing or appearing.

Open a new document (800×600px and black background).

Select ((Brush Tool)) and go to the brush selection, located above in the options bar. In the superior right part of the window appears a small arrow. Click it to see the drop down menu. Select “Thick Heavy Brushes”. Observe the following image.

Create a ((New Layer)).

Choose #e34412 as the main color.

Once you have selected the brush “Rough Round Bristle”, size 104, start drawing a line with the “S” shape, as seen below.

Draw a similar one, with color #e11247.

Duplicate this layer 2 times (Ctrl + J).

To the middle layer, change the blending mode to ((Linear Dodge)).

To the superior one, to ((Screen)).

Apply  ((Filter))-((Blur))-((Radial Blur)) to the three layers, with the values that appear below.

Select the 3 layers and press Ctrl + E to unify them.

Here comes the funny part! Go to menu ((Filter))-((Liquify)).

In the filter, you will see several tools, located in the right side. The two tools we will use will be: ((Forward Warp Tool)) and ((Twirl Clockwise Tool)). Enter the values you will see to the left side of the window. Try to recreate an effect like the one that appears below, so play, enjoy, and test this wonderful tool until you reach the goal.

Once you have the desired results, accept the changes.

Duplicate the layer 2 times (Ctrl + J). There should be 3 layers, 4 if you count the background one.

To the superior layer, change the layer mode to ((Soft Light)).

To the middle one, to ((Darker Color)).

Stand in the first layer and double click it to go to ((Layer Styles)) and apply ((Outer Glow)).

This is the final result!
